Disclaimer: Well, I dont own Buffy, or any of her friends, But if someone does and would like to sell them to me, I'd be willing to pay all of my money for her. That amounts to $15.

Jenny was driving Willow, Xander, and Cordy in her car, but Giles was driving Buffy in his car.
Aside from the point that Jenny didn't have any more room in her little blue car, Will, Xander, and Cordelia even, agreed that Buffy and Giles needed to talk.
Angel left to slay as many Vampires as he could before they all went back into hiding, so Buffy was left to attend the prom dateless.
That's OK, though. Everyone in their raggedy looking group was dateless, so she wouldn't seem too strange. Or maybe they would all seem very strange. At first Buffy thought Miss Calendar and Giles would go to the prom together. Sure it was a student event, but it was a dance all the same, and they seemed to really like each other. Apparently they decided not to have dates, though. Something too "Childish" about it, according to Giles.
In his very slow car, Buffy sat staring out the window. Giles was clearly distracted by her aimless stare. Finally he said, "Buffy, I know" but he was cut off.
"No, you don't know, but that's OK. No one does."
"I ...was going to say that you must be very distraut."
"Well, distraut. sure. I mean, I ruined this pretty dress, My hair and makeup's a total mess, oh, and I died."
Giles paused before continuing. "Was...was it painful?" He asked.
"Well...at...first it was like a stinging feeling. Then it grew into a burning, and then it felt like I was slowley bleeding to death. But...you'd have been proud, I didn't scream or anything."
Giles didn't know what to say. How to comfort the girl...where to begin?
"Ya know, its weird. My first instinct is to go to my Mom, I keep thinking she'll know what to do. ...I cant even tell her about this. She cant even get an inkling that this happened. If she knew..."
"I know Buffy" But he saw the look Buffy him. "All right, I don't know, but honestly, I am here for you. If you want to talk..."
"I kinda thought that's what I was doing."
"Well, not just now, anytime."
"...Thank you. That's ... no one's ever told me that before."
"So...you could have given up ..back there. You could have just ...let yourself die. I know it would have been easier to stop fighting, I've been near death myself, many times." Giles said, seriously.
"Well, when I thought of what I'd be loosing, ya know, This nifty dress, Mr. Gordo...You, I just told myself, 'You know what? Heaven can wait.' "
Giles pulled into the Bronze's parking lot, reeling from what Buffy had just said, but not showing it at all. That meant a lot to him, that she chose life over death for him, and that wasn't always an easy choice to make, he should know.
"I didn't even know the Bronze HAD a parking lot." Buffy said, changing to a lighter topic.
"Oh yes, for a while now. And it's never hard to find good parking." Giles said, snapping back to the present.
"That's a plus." Buffy said, as he pulled into a parking space.
Miss Calendar pulled in to a space next to them. They were the only one's parked in the lot.
As Buffy got out, Willow said "Hey Buffy! lets go dance. I really feel like dancing, because, hey! We didn't die! Well, wait, you did, but...oh...I'm messing this whole thing up." Then she turned to Xander and said "You're supposed to stop me when I do that." Xander shrugged. "Hey, Buffy, there's a bright side to everything. I mean, come on! We're at our first prom!" Xander said, hoping to make things a little better. "Actually, I went to prom last year...in LA. I was freshman prom queen. It was...perfect." She said, in a kind of far away voice.
"Yeah, and once, Buffy was voted Ciesta Queen, too!" Cordelia added helpfully.
"Fiesta, it was the Fiesta Queen, and yeah, that was the spring before the prom."
"Any other titles you wanna tell us about?" Willow asked, genuinely.
"Um...Snow Queen, the winter before that, Best costume at the Halloween party, and Best dressed, first day of school. I held every major title a freshman could hold. I was captain of the Freshman Squad, I... feel like an old person going on about my glory days. Lets just go in and dance."
"I'm all for it. You're making me look bad. Just remember, I'm the popular one now." Cordy said, walking in. "How could I forget?" Buffy said silently, but Giles heard her. "Come on, in we go. It's time to Party likes it's 1997!" Xander said, following Cordy, Willow in toe. Buffy followed silently, Giles and Miss Calendar after her.
When Buffy walked in, the first thing she noticed was just exactly how shabby she looked compared to the rest of the Sophomores. A song was ending, Xander led Willow and Buffy on to the dance floor before the next song started as, seemingly, the entire Sophomore class stared on, Xander whispered in Buffy's ear "Ignore them" and Buffy tried. Cordelia was already being followed around like a celebrity by every guy with eyes. But Xander was unaffected by her evil spell. The three danced together, being watched by Giles.
Miss Calendar was off in a corner, flirting with a Math teacher. A semi-cute Math teacher, but, ugh, a math teacher all the same. The next song started, "Building a mystery" by Sarah Mclachlan. The three danced to the rather slow beat.

"You come out at night
That's when the energy comes
And the dark side's light
And the vampires roam"

Buffy glanced at Giles and they shared a smile.

"You strut your rasta wear
And your suicide poem
And a cross from a faith that died
Before Jesus came"

Buffy glanced at her own cross and ran her fingers through her hair, trying to tame it.

"You're building a mystery
You live in a church
Where you sleep with voodoo dolls
And you won't give up the search
For the ghosts in the halls"

Buffy thought of the Masters prison, and shuttered. Its the place where she died. 'That could present religious issues in the future' she thought.

"You wear sandals in the snow
And a smile that won't wash away
Can you look out the window
Without your shadow getting in the way?"

Xander nudged her, and Willow gave her a knowing look. Buffy plastered on a smile and kept dancing with them, but she wasn't fooling them for a second, and she knew it.

"You're so beautiful
With an edge and charm
but so careful
When I'm in your arms
Cause you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully"

Buffy sighed, She was tired, and what right did this person have to sing at her, anyway?

"You woke up screaming aloud
A prayer from your secret god
You feed off our fears
And hold back your tears, oh"

Giles was looking at her, smiling, because he knew the song was singing at her too.

"Give us a tantrum
And a know it all grin
Just when we need one
When the evening's thin"

Giles was still looking at her, smiling wider now, and Buffy knew he was thinking of earlier, the night before, when she had "quit" and stormed out of the library.

"You're a beautiful
A beautiful screwed up man
You're setting up your
Razor wire shrine
Cause you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully
Ooh you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully
You're building a mystery"

The song ended, and everyone paused, waiting for the next song to start. When they heard the intro to it, The entire Sophomore class paired up, it was a song for slow dancing. Xander said "Hey, girls, lets Dance in a very threesome way, and leave me to my imagining." "No, that's OK, you and Willow dance, I'm kinda beat, I'll sit this one out." Buffy said, knowing this was Willows one true dream, to dance with Xander at a prom.
Buffy cleared off the floor kind of sadly, and slumped down in a chair thinking, 'I used to have a problem deciding who to dance with, now I have a problem finding someone to dance with.' Giles couldn't help but notice Buffy's sad face. He walked over and said "Buffy, I know you're tired, but, may I have this dance?" Buffy's face brightened a little, just enough to be noticed by Giles, and she said "All right, but be careful, I'm all wet." Giles smiled and said "Nonsense, you're starting to dry off." And Buffy smiled at his attempt at a joke. He was trying, and that mattered to her. She let him lead her on to the dance floor as the lyrics to the song started.

"Heroes don't cry
Heroes don't cry
Standing here in front of you
A wave of joy and sadness fills the room
Your soul has crashed into a wall
Your world just broke to pieces after all"

Buffy leaned against Giles and sighed at the irony of this song. Giles held her close, picking up on her distress.

"The days of your life
Leave the world standing outside
But you find the strength for a smile
Because heroes like you wouldn't cry
Heroes don't cry
Heroes don't cry"

Buffy pulled back a little and looked Giles straight in the eyes, and he looked back. She felt a shot of adrenaline shoot through her, and suddenly she was warm. She smiled, she like that feeling, and Giles smiled back, he had felt it too.

"The judge decided it's your right
To wake up from the dream of your life
The curtain is about to fall
No need for words, your eyes just say it all
The days of your life
Leave the world standing outside
You find the strength for a smile
Because heroes like you wouldn't cry
Heroes don't cry
There are days of your life
Leave the world standing outside
You find the strength for a smile
Because heroes like you wouldn't cry
Heroes don't cry"

Buffy felt her eyes start to sting at the words of the song, but she shook it off, the song was right, Heroes don't cry. Giles noticed and sighed, hoping she'd just let herself cry. She had a lot to let out of her system, and he'd rather be there for her when she did. She shouldn't have to face it alone.

"I can't forget that afternoon
So many times I've been thinking of you
I'm happy that you've decided to live
And what touches me most is what you said
Heaven can wait, can wait, can wait..."

A tear fell down Buffy's cheek, and Giles pulled her close, and rested his chin on her head, knowing there would be more to come. He felt her sob, and knew she was letting go. What an ordeal, to have...died. Giles noticed the bite marks on Buffy's neck and cringed. She truly was extraordinary. She was so strong...and yet she was letting herself be weak around him, and that meant something to him.
In a corner, unnoticed, Angel was watching the whole scene unfold. He looked across the room at Jenny and she was looking at him. They both knew that Giles and Buffy belonged together. And no matter how Angel or Jenny would try, They would still belong to one another. Angel saw Buffy cry, and he longed to wipe her tears, but looking at Giles he knew she was better off with him doing the job. As Angel disappeared into the shadows he thought, 'No one would understand them, if they were to date. But then again no one understands them now. They were both chosen against their will, and they were forced together in the midst of an incomprehensibly large war. They're both in over their heads, and they're finding out that neither of them knows how to swim. But maybe together...maybe together they could learn to float...to stay above the chaos below...maybe that's enough.
