Buffy found the envelope propped up on the kitchen counter beside the sink. She couldn’t have missed it if she tried. It was bright red, and her name was embossed on the front in elegant gold lettering. She opened it slowly to read the note inside.

You are cordially
invited to attend
a Valentine’s Ball
to be held at
The Bronze
7:00 pm February 14

There was no signature or other indication of who may have sent the invitation.

The red envelope caught Giles’ attention as he entered his kitchen. He opened the envelop to reveal the invitation inside. ‘I wonder who left this,’ he thought.

His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door opening. “Giles, are you here?” It was Buffy.

He carried the invitation with him as he walked out to greet her. “Hello, Buffy.”

“Hey, you got one too,” Buffy said.

“What?”

“The invitation, Giles.” She indicated the envelope in his left hand. “Willow, Tara, Xander, and Anya each got one.” She sat on the couch. “I got one too,” she added as an after thought.

“I suppose you are going,” Giles said as he joined her on the couch.

“I haven’t decided. It’s Valentine’s Day. I don’t want to be the only one there without a date.”

Giles spoke quietly, “I’m sure you won’t be the only one.”

“Are you going to go?” she asked.

“I’ll go if you go.”

“So we can be miserable together?” Giles gave her a disapproving look. “Alright. I’ll go, but you owe me, Mister.”

‘This is not a date. We’re going as friends. It’s just so we won’t be alone.’ Buffy check her hair in the mirror one more time. ‘Then why am I so nervous?” she asked herself. A noise downstairs brought her out of her thoughts.

“Buffy, your date’s here,” Dawn shouted.

Buffy was about to tell Dawn once again that Giles was not her date, but the words caught in her throat when she saw him. She was instantly reminded of the prom, the last time she’d seen him in a tux. “Wow,” was all she was able to say.

“You look lovely yourself,” Giles said as he watched her walk down the stairs. He couldn’t take his eyes off her. She was wearing a dark red dress with spaghetti straps and a full, floor length skirt. He held his arm out for her. “Shall we go?”

She took his arm as she nodded.

Giles escorted Buffy into the Bronze after showing their invitations at the door. Buffy spotted Willow and Tara right away. As they made their way through the crowd, Buffy saw Anya and Xander on the dance floor.

“Hey, Guys,” Willow said. “We weren’t sure you’d come.”

“Why not?” Buffy asked as she sat down. Tara smiled when she noticed that Giles had pulled the chair out for her and pushed it back as she sat down.

“Well, no dates.”

“It’s okay, Will. There wasn’t anything on the invitation that said I couldn’t come with a friend.”

“But don’t you feel awkward?” Willow asked.

“Not at all,” Giles answered. He turned to Buffy. “Would you like something to drink?”

“Sure.”

When Giles returned to the table, Willow and Tara were gone.

Before he could ask, Buffy said, “Will and Tara are dancing. They said it’s the first slow song all night. They wanted to take advantage of it.” They were quiet as the song ended and another started. It was another slow song, “I Can Love You Like That” by All-4-One. ‘What would it hurt,’ she asked herself. “Giles, would you like to dance?”

[they read you cinderella]
[you hoped it would come true]
[that one day your prince charming would come rescue you]
[you like romantic movies]
[and you never will forget]
[the way it felt when romeo kissed juliette]
[and all this time that you've been waiting]
[you don't have to wait no more]
[i can love you like that]
[i would make you my world]
[move heaven and earth if you were my girl]
[i would give you my heart]
[be all that you need]
[show you you're everything that's precious to me]
[if you give me a chance, i can love you like that]

He smiled. “I’d love to.” Once again, he held his arm out for her, and she took it.

As they walked out onto the dance floor, Buffy felt something small hit her back. She looked around, but didn’t see anything. Giles was touching his shoulder. “Something wrong?” she asked.

“I thought I felt something. It’s nothing to worry about.”

Giles held Buffy close as they danced. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the moment. ‘This is nice,’ she thought.

As the song continued, Giles sang along with it.

[I never make a promise]
[I don't intend to keep]
[so when I say forever]
[forever's what I mean]
[I’m no casanova]
[but I swear this much is true,]
[I’ll be holding nothing back]
[when it comes to you]
[you dream of love that's everlasting]
[well baby open up your eyes...]

[I can love you like that]
[I would make you my world]
[move heaven and earth if you were my girl]
[I would give you my heart]
[be all that you need]
[show you you're everything that's precious to me]
[if you give me a chance, I can love you like that]

[if you want tenderness]
[I’ve got tenderness]
[and I see through to the heart of you]
[if you want a man]
[who will understand]
[you don't have to look very far]

[I can love you, girl I can (I can love you love you) ]
[oh baby oh...]
[I can love you like that]
[I would make you my world]
[move heaven and earth if you were my girl]
[I would give you my heart]
[be all that you need]
[show you you're everything that's precious to me]
[I can love you like that]
[I can make you my world]
[move heaven and earth if you were my girl]
[I would give you my heart]
[my heart my heart my world]
[show you you're everything (you're everything to me) ]
[love you like that]
[I can make you my world]
[move heaven and earth if you were my girl]
[I would give you my heart]
[my heart my heart my world]
[show you you're everything]

By the time the song ended, Buffy was in tears. Giles looked into her eyes as he wiped away a few tears. “Buffy, are you alright?”

“Do you mean it? What you sang, did you mean it?”

“Every word,” he said and leaned down to kiss her.

“See, Xander. I told you that all they needed was a nudge in the right direction,” Anya said.

“But how did you do it?” Tara asked.

“Cupid owed me a favor.”

“So, they’re under a spell?” Willow asked.

“No. Contrary to popular belief, Cupid’s arrows don’t work that way. They just help bring feelings to the surface, feelings that are already there.”

The group watched as Buffy and Giles kissed, oblivious of the people dancing around them.

“I guess they had dates after all,” Xander said. “Who knew it would be each other?” All three girls raised their hands.
